Milan Dobeš
29 July 1929, Přerov – 17 October 2025, Bratislava

On Friday, 17 October, the art world was struck by sad news. At the age of 96, Milan Dobeš, a Slovak visual artist of Czech origin, a pioneer of light and kinetic art, and a prominent representative of constructivist and geometric abstraction, passed away.

Milan Dobeš was among the most significant representatives of light and kinetic art in Central Europe.

Artistic Oeuvre

In his work, he explored the relationship between light, movement, and space, thereby creating unique visual compositions that combined technical precision with artistic intuition. His works are distinguished by meticulous treatment of geometry, dynamism, and optical effects.

He presented his work at numerous major international exhibitions, including:

  • Documenta 4 in Kassel
  • ARS ’69 in Helsinki
  • Biennial of Constructive Art in Nuremberg
  • May Salon in Paris

In 2001, the Milan Dobeš Museum was established in Bratislava, dedicated to his work and artistic legacy.

In 2012, he received the Minister of Culture of the Slovak Republic Award for his lifetime contribution to the field of visual arts and for the presentation of his work on the global art scene.

Final Work

Located on the premises of law firm soukeník — štrpka is his monumental concrete stele, the final work that Milan Dobeš created for public space.

This work remains for us a lasting reminder of his exceptional talent and artistic legacy.

We remember him with respect.
